Galiano Island lies within the traditional territories of Penelakut, Hwlitsum, and Tsawwassen First Nations, and of other Hul’qumi’num-speaking peoples, on whose land we are guests. May our initiative to document the biodiversity of this place promote care and respect for all life as it exists in the Salish Sea.

Place-based Species Lists

Galiano Island is host to a vibrant diversity of species and ecosystems representative of British Columbia’s Coastal Douglas-fir Biogeoclimatic Zone. To help “place” this biodiversity into perspective, our community is actively engaged in preparing species lists for specific island localities.

These lists include data gathered by local community members as well as experts in various fields of taxonomic research. As “checklists” they offer a great way to learn about your local biodiversity. You are invited to peruse them (and add to them) via the gallery links—but please remember to tread lightly when you venture out and explore.
